Fumigation is a targeted treatment technique commonly used by pest management professionals to effectively control pests that attack stored goods and commodities.
In today’s economy, it is a common practise for businesses to transport goods and commodities between countries via shipment or aircraft. In the process of goods import or export, it provides pests many opportunities to infest the cargo and enter into the country. Quarantine fumigation is conducted to keep these disease carrying pests from doing so.
Fumigants or in layman ‘gas’ used in fumigation are highly toxic to living organism including humans. Hence the use of fumigant is highly controlled by local legislation and is required to be registered. Fumigant is applied into an enclosed and air-tight space. With sufficient concentration and time, it will result in eradication of stored product insects in any life cycle and also larger pest such as rats.
Nevertheless fumigation does not cause damage to the treated items but will keep goods and commodities safe from pest infestation. Correct and strict procedures by a trained fumigator are important to ensure that fumigant does not pose any health risk to humans or pets.
Why the need for fumigation services?
Stringent export requirements and fumigation procedures have been implemented to govern the quarantine services to exporting countries. The Department of Plant Protection of Pakistan maintains a registrar of fumigation companies and all accredited fumigators. Their activities are monitored through annual audits by the ministry to ensure compliance.
To meet these ever-increasing requirements, freight forwarders, logistics companies and warehousing service providers prefer to pair their pest risk management plan with a sound pest management programme which proves to be a holistic approach to protect the manufacturing, storage and transportation process from pest infestation.

Fumigating shipping containers are usually a standard protocol for many countries to ensure pests do not enter their country, as it is feared to carry diseases. There are 2 types of container fumigation, which categories by the volume of shipment goods.
Full Container Fumigation
A Full Container Load (FCL) fumigation is commonly conducted for goods and packaging export. The exported goods loaded within the shipping container will be fumigated and the gas will be held for a minimum period before being ventilated. Lastly, the doors will be sealed and only then the container is allowed to be dispatched.
A fumigation certificate is subsequently issued for the treated contents and the container. Depending on the destination of the cargo and whether it contains wood packaging material (WPM), relevant fumigation standards are followed by the fumigator during treatment.
Loose Container Fumigation
A Loose Container Load (LCL) fumigation is easily distinguished because it is too small to occupy an entire container. Therefore in a same container, the cargo will travels with other LCL items belonging to other owners.
For fumigation purposes, the cargo is kept separate from others. The fumigation is conducted on-site, usually at the forwarding agent’s premises. The items are treated with fumigant under gas proof sheeting for a minimum period before being ventilated.
A fumigation certificate is subsequently issued for the treated goods. It is then loaded into the container depending on destination and whether it contains wood packaging material (WPM), relevant fumigation standards are applied by the fumigator in this treatment.
